'I had to be brutal': Chris Brown on dumping his live-in girlfriend Karrueche Tran to rekindle romance with Rihanna

Chris Brown has revealed he struggled when he realised he still loved Rihanna and had to tell his girlfriend Karrueche Tran he had feelings for his ex.

The singer initially shocked the world when he revealed in October his feelings towards Rihanna, whom he had seriously assaulted during their relationship.

He told radio station Hot 97 he decided to make a video about his feelings for two woman at the time as he thought it was the mature thing to do.

He told US radio station: 'I wanted to be more of a man. 

'Me being young, even with relationships in the past, I did a lot of lying, I did everything just to make sure nobody gets hurt in the process,' he said.

His then live-in girlfriend of more than a year Karrueche did seem very hurt especially about Chris making a public video.

The model took to Twitter at the time saying: 'WTF is going on?'

'All I am saying is... You don't mess with people's genuine feelings. You just don't!'

Despite his girlfriend being left feeling blindsided, Chris insisted on the station on Monday that it had to be done.

'I just don't feel it's necessary anymore in my life. Nobody can hate me for being honest. I had to just be brutal. I told both of them that the video was coming out.

'I'm not trying to be a player. It's never an easy situation to tell another person that you still love another person, so that's kinda difficult. 

'But our friendship, me and Karrueche's friendship, is still cool. We're still good friends.'

Karrueche and the 23-year-old star officially split in October - the same time Chris was spotted with Rihanna, whom he was convicted of viciously assaulting in 2009.

The station sparked rumours that the two singers had already split over the weekend after tweeting: 'Are you still w/ @Rihanna?' @ChrisBrown: 'Uh, no - that's the short answer' just now to @BigBoy POWER 106 LA @TuneIn.'

Later on Monday Chris however made it clear he was still with the Diamonds singer during an appearance on the Today show.

When presenter Matt Lauer asked if they were still together, Chris replied: 'Absolutely. Everything is fine.'
